Bariatric surgery or Obesity surgery or weight loss surgery is a procedure performed on people who are obese. It includes a variety of procedures. This surgery is done by reducing the size of the stomach through removal of a portion of the stomach (sleeve gastrectomy) or by resecting and re-routing the small intestines to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery).
World Health Organization (WHO) has defined obesity as a disease. But practically it is mother of many diseases like Diabetes, Hypertension, Hypercholesterolomia, Cardiac and Respiratory problems and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Moreover, obesity leads to back and joint pain, skin and hygienic problems, Urinary Tract Infections, Infertility and Menstrual problems in females. For all the complications, patient has to undergo multiple procedures and surgeries. Bariatric surgery & Obesity surgery offers options to counter the metabolic effects of obesity. The various options can be discussed with our bariatric consultant.
An Intragastric Balloon is a non-surgical way to reduce excess weight. A deflated Balloon is inserted by Endoscopy in the stomach. This procedure can be done without general Anesthesia, just by local anesthetist spray. The Balloon is filled by a coloured saline Its presence in the stomach gives a feeling of fullness, helping in weight loss. The balloon is removed by endoscopy after a period of six months. In conjunction with a supervised diet, regular physical activity and behavior modification program, it helps achieve the health and aesthetic benefits associated with weight loss.
The Adjustable Gastric Band is a hollow band made of silastic which is placed around the upper third portion of stomach to create a small stomach pouch that initially holds 2 ounces of food, and eventually holds up to 4 to 6 ounces. Creating this restricted stomach space in the upper portion of the stomach causes a longer lasting feeling of fullness because the nerves that signal the brain when you're full are located in the upper area of the stomach. The band further works by slowly allowing the food one eats to be released into the lower portion of the stomach for digestion.
Sleeve Gastrectomy is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 25% of its original size, by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature. The result is a sleeve or tube like structure. The procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach, although there could be some dilatation of the stomach later on in life. The procedure is generally performed laparoscopically and is irreversible.
Known as the gold standard for Bariatric procedure. Creation of a small proximal pouch of the stomach ( around 15 to 30 cc ) to which a Roux limb of jejunum is anastomosed.
In various trials, RYGBP is found to induce significantly greater weight loss than other procedures. This is particularly true for patients addicted to sweets, as most sweet eaters develop dumping syndrome symptoms after the ingestion of foods rich in sugar.
It is a newer method which is less complex and simpler. Weight-loss is excellent along with significant improvement in metabolic problems like Diabetes, Hypercholesterolemia, Blood Pressure and Cardiac problems. It is the only procedure which is reversible & revisable.
